Editorial- Why should Indian surgeons affiliate with SICOT?

Without any doubts, Indian surgeons have become more active in education, research and therefore in delivering better patient care. It is the demand of the times. With rising dissatisfaction amongst the patient community with their medical care givers, doctors have awoken to the call of better patient care. Medicolegal tangles and ‘doctor beating’is on the rise and the medical community has been forced to take note of the dissatisfaction expressed by patients and the media, though in small numbers
.
Educational activities and training programs are happening at the regional, state and national levels as never before. Why should a surgeon then affiliate with SICOT? SICOT is the prime body in Orthopaedics. An international association is truly representative of the different levels of Orthopaedics being practiced in different countries and hence a lot of exchange of knowledge and transfer of technology and techniques can take place. International exposure leads to international collaborations and invitations, no doubt to individual surgeons but the country gets represented and India acquires a voice.

For the young surgeons, SICOT has opportunities galore. A huge number of scholarships and fellowships, educational programs and activities, the Education Day, the Dip SICOT examination, journals like International Orthopaedics and SICOT-J the open access journal from SICOT. Besides all this, the SICOT Newsletter is very informative and contains knowledge of value for day to day practice. SIGNEL is SICOT’s e-learning program and SICOT India has also been conducting many programmes. SIGNEL houses e-learning in various forms including lectures, videos, articles, books etc. So a lot is happening!

Isn’t it time Indian surgeons also look beyond their regions, their state and national associations to international shores - to conquer the lacunae in their knowledge and skills by learning from their peers and authorities in the international arena. Awaken, arise –  and rest not!

Ashok Johari
President, SICOT India

OSTEC Roadshow
Professors James Waddell from Toronto, Peter Biberthaler from Munich, and Pierre Hoffmeyer from Geneva were invited by Prof Ashok Johari to participate in a Trauma Roadshow. The programme started at 10 am each morning in five cities across India (Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai, and Delhi) during 14- 19th July 2015. There was a mix of Didactic Lectures and Case Studies that were discussed. The Indian Faculty included Prof Lalit Maini(Delhi), Dr RH Govardhan (Chennai), Dr NS Laud(Mumbai), DrArindam Banerjee(Kolkata),  Dr John Mukhopadhyay(Patna), Dr DD Tanna(Mumbai) and a host of regional faculty. Close to 800 Orthopaedic Surgeons across the vast length and breadth of India benefitted by the interaction and the program was very well received. It upheld the banner of SICOT as a truly international society globalising orthopaedics and traumatology

SICOT - APROC 2015:

SICOT India hosted the Asia Pacific Regional Orthopaedic Course (APROC - 2015) on the 29th and 30th August in Mumbai. We had international faculty and also from the Asia Pacific region and the course was primarily organised for surgeons from the Asia Pacific region. I am happy to say that SICOT HQ supported this venture and also sponsored the travel for one international faculty. The theme for APROC was 'Complications in Orthopaedic Surgery'.  APROC had its own website at www.aproc2015.in. Foreign faculty included Hitendra Doshi(Singapore), Ram Kewal Shah (Nepal), Kandiah Raveendran(Malaysia), Dr Rob Wallace from Adelaide, Australia. Dr Vaibhav Bagaria and his Co-Consultants at the Sir HN Reliance foundation Hospital at South Mumbai took the leading role in organising this meeting.  The course that covered all aspects of orthopaedics had 10 sessions with focus on major sub-specialities – Spine, Paediatrics, Trauma, Joint Replacement, Oncology and Sports medicine and Rehabilitation. An innovative Key note session along with a 'Wings to Dream' session ensured that the course was comprehensive even going beyond orthopaedics and touching upon the important issues of technological innovations, value of cultivating team culture, Academic affiliations, Research, Evidence Based Orthopaedics, Ethics and patient doctor communication. The course had been granted an accreditation with 4 CME points by Maharashtra Medical council.

Research Survey on VTE
We are undertaking a Venous ThromboEmbolism survey to know the preferences of surgeons “practicing in India”. One of the objectives of the survey is to find out whether we follow the standard recommendations as in the West, and how different our practices are. The notion that VTE is rare in this part of the world, continues to exist. This is the link for the Survey:  http://bit.ly/1RVa8Ie
